The 111th McLean Day festival returns to Lewinsville Park on May 15-16, drawing over 10,000 visitors for carnival rides, live music, food trucks, and family fun. It’s the perfect kickoff to a packed calendar of community events across Northern Virginia—from ViVa! Vienna! on Memorial Day weekend to the Tephra ICA Arts Festival in Reston.
Whether you’re loading up the kids for McLean Day or planning a summer road trip to Virginia Beach, a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s how to make the most of festival season while keeping your family safe.
Getting There: Road Trip Ready
Festival weekends mean crowded roads, distracted drivers, and packed parking lots. Before you head out:
Check your vehicle. Ensure tires are properly inflated, brakes are responsive, and all lights work. The Virginia DMV recommends a quick safety check before any summer trip.
Plan your route. Use VDOT’s 511 app for real-time traffic updates. McLean Day offers free Fairfax Connector shuttle service from designated parking sites—take advantage of it to skip the parking headache.
Buckle up—everyone. Virginia law now requires all adult passengers, including those in the back seat, to wear seat belts. It’s not just the law; it’s the easiest way to protect your family.
At the Festival: Stay Safe While Having Fun
Community festivals are generally safe, but with thousands of people, food vendors, carnival rides, and excited kids running around, accidents can happen.
Watch your step. Uneven ground, extension cords, tent stakes, and spilled drinks create slip-and-fall hazards. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and keep an eye on little ones.
Stay hydrated. May temperatures in Northern Virginia can climb into the 80s. Drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and never leave children or pets in parked cars—temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly within minutes.
Supervise the rides. Carnival rides are inspected and regulated, but follow all height requirements and safety instructions. If something looks off, trust your instincts.
Designate a meeting spot. In case anyone gets separated, pick a landmark where everyone can regroup.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
Most festival days end with nothing more than tired feet and a little too much funnel cake. But if you or a family member is injured—whether in a car accident on the way, a slip and fall at the venue, or an incident involving a ride or vendor—knowing your next steps matters.
