Road Tripping to Sail250? Your Guide to a Safe and Epic Summer Adventure

Sail250 Virginia road trip tall ships Norfolk summer adventureIf you haven’t heard, the most spectacular maritime event in 50 years is happening right now in Virginia. Sail250 Virginia has brought more than 60 tall ships and military vessels from 20 countries to Norfolk and the Chesapeake Bay region to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The Parade of Sail on June 19 alone is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of spectators.

For families in Fairfax County and Northern Virginia, this is a bucket-list road trip just a few hours away. Here’s how to make the most of it while keeping everyone safe on the journey.

The Drive: Fairfax to Norfolk

The drive from Fairfax to Norfolk is about 200 miles and typically takes 3 to 3.5 hours, but expect heavier traffic during Sail250. A few tips:

Leave early. Beat the crowds by hitting the road before 7 a.m. or after the morning rush. I-64 through Hampton Roads will be busier than usual.

Check VDOT’s 511 app. Real-time traffic updates will help you avoid backups, especially near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

Top off your tank. Gas stations near event venues may have long lines. Fill up before you get close.

Pack snacks and water. Keep everyone happy and hydrated, especially if you hit traffic or want to avoid overpriced festival food.

At the Event: Stay Safe in the Crowds

With tens of thousands of visitors expected at waterfront viewing areas, a little planning goes a long way.

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking on docks, cobblestones, and crowded sidewalks. Leave the flip-flops at home.

Protect yourself from the sun. June in Virginia means heat and humidity. Sunscreen, hats, and shade breaks are essential.

Keep kids close. Crowded events can be overwhelming. Designate a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated, and consider ID bracelets for younger children.

Watch your step near the water. Dock areas, gangways, and waterfront railings can be slippery. Keep a close eye on little ones near the ships.

If Something Goes Wrong

Hopefully your Sail250 adventure is nothing but smooth sailing. But if you’re involved in a car accident on the drive, injured in a slip and fall at the venue, or hurt in any other incident, knowing your next steps matters.

Get medical attention. Even if injuries seem minor, get checked out.

Document everything. Photos, witness info, police reports.

Don’t sign anything. Insurance adjusters move fast. Know your rights before accepting any settlement.
