Back To School Safety Tips

Back To School Safety TipsFall is almost here, which means, it’s already time for children to head back to school.  While children usually experience a mixture of excitement to see their school friends again as well as some sadness for the end of the summer holidays, they don’t think of or anticipate any risk of injury at school.   Generally, the fear of being injured at school is not very common among school goers.  Whether it is a very young child playing on the playground or a high schooler walking through the halls, the potential for accident to occur on school property is a possibility.  You can’t save your children from injury, but you can guide them on how to act safely.  Here are a few examples of how you can make them aware of common back to school injuries and guide them accordingly.

Head Injuries

Young athletes are the most prone to head injuries.  Generally speaking, kids can bump their heads just about anywhere, but it is most common on the sports field where they often get hit by a ball or get knocked down while playing.  Head injuries, including concussions, are very common and can be severe.  According to research, approximately 564,000 children suffer from serious head injuries every year.

Precautions

Teaching / guiding your child is every parent’s responsibility.  Educating your child on the importance of the proper use of sporting goods and protective gear is essential as well as teaching them to be mindful of behavior and their surroundings off the field.  For instance, running on potentially slippery sidewalks or wet floors, can be hazardous.

Wrist Injuries

It’s a natural reflex to brace our fall with the help of our wrist.  While this might help prevent serious injury, it often results in a twisted wrist or a damaged ligament.

Precautions

Young children should always be supervised.  It is the responsibility of the school administration to ensure that children at school are always supervised.  It is impossible to predict the students’ movement, but immediate first aid can often reduce long term damage after the injury.

Twisted Ankles

Twisted or sprained ankles are the most common injuries among school children.  Children twist / sprain their ankles for many reasons. Twisted ankles can come from playing sports or running across a wet surface.  The pain is often very sharp, but if treated immediately, long term damage can often be avoided.

Precautions

Proper shoes play an important part in accident prevention.  Make sure children wear appropriate footwear for school activities and weather.
