Car Accident Rates on the 4th of July

Car Accident Rates on the 4th of JulyFor many of us, the Fourth of July is a great time to go on a road trip vacation with the family, watch fireworks, and enjoy the summertime.  Unfortunately, with the increase in traffic on the roads, and the celebratory drinking that tends to go hand in hand with this holiday, the 4th of July has the highest rate of car accidents of the entire year.

Fourth of July Accident Statistics:

The highest number of car accidents in a day happens on the 4th of July followed by the 3rd of July.  These are all generally the result of drunk driving. An estimated 43.6 million people were expected to take to the road this year, with.  These numbers are an average as per the National Safety Council (NSC).

Precautionary guidelines for the next Fourth of July and for the other 364 days of the year:

1.      Do Not Drink and Drive:

People often think that they are sober enough to drive after drinking.  Please avoid driving when drinking alcohol.  There are other options available.  You not only put yourself in danger but also risk other people’s lives when you drive in an intoxicated state.  If you plan on partying, make appropriate plans for your ride beforehand so you don’t have to think about it then, or use a ride sharing service!

2.      Always Wear Your Seatbelt:

You are 45% less likely to die in a car accident if you wear your seatbelt.  Statistics show that “drivers and passengers aged between 17 and 34 have the lowest seatbelt wearing rate.” These belts can save lives.  Buckle up while driving and ask everyone else to put their seatbelts on.

3.      Drive Within the Speed Limits:

Following the rules of the road, including staying within the speed limit, can greatly reduce your risk for being involved in a deadly accident.   It’s better to reach your destination later safely, rather than not reaching it at all.

4.      Do Not Drive When Drowsy:

It is essential to rest before driving, especially if you are on a highway.  Make sure you are well rested and if you become tired while driving, immediately find a safe place to stop and take a short rest before carrying on with your journey.

5.     Do Not Use the Phone While Driving:

Phones and other handheld devices are a major distraction while driving.  This includes map reading, texting, dialing, etc.  Always put the phone in silent mode or use the handsfree answering feature, if available to you.  If you need to make a call, or check directions, pull over safely and park your vehicle before using the phone or tablet.
