Speed Cameras to Set Ticket Record

Speed Cameras to Set Ticket RecordNovember 16, 2020:  In Baltimore County the number of speeding tickets issued by speed cameras are on track to set an all-time ticket record.  The cause seems to be more open roads due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to officials in Baltimore County, they have seen more aggressive and high-speed driving during the pandemic, which has resulted in a massive 10% increase for speed camera ticketing.  From January to October, they issued 181,525 citations according to information from The Baltimore Sun.  This is 17,483 up from 164,042 citations issued in 2019.

A representative from the AAA Mid-Atlantic Region, Ragina C. Ali, expressed no surprise at these increased numbers, stating, “A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests that during the height of the pandemic, drivers were exhibiting more dangerous and risky driving behaviors including speeding.”

What is so alarming is that while during the current pandemic traffic is at record breaking lows.  This does not mean that accidents cannot occur.  According to research, speeding is the second most common cause of accidents, and as we approach the colder season, speeding in bad weather conditions amplifies the risk.  While exceeding the speed limits on open and empty roads seems tempting, it is imperative for your safety and the safety of others that you continue to abide by the rules of the road.
